The Jumpman isn’t missing its shot with their debut football collection. Under a multi-year partnership with Paris Saint-Germain, Jordan is sublimating its DNA into the bloodline of one of the top clubs in modern football. For PSG’s latest 2018-19 campaign, the Jumpman is popping up on PSG’s third and fourth kits for Champions League matches, with the brand releasing an entire collaborative range of boots, sneakers, apparel and training gear.
The remixing process, as David Creech, VP of Design at Jordan Brand, explained to The Beautiful Gear, was so natural, that at first glance at some of the collection’s pieces, you might not notice the Jumpman cleverly resting where the Eiffel Tower normally resides in Jordan’s take on PSG’s badge.
“Placing the Jumpman in PSG’s circle, it’s a little bit of irreverence, but also, we feel a perfect connection between the two iconic brands,” Creech says.
Throughout the collection, Creech and his design team referenced the Jordan XIII’s 3M detailing and perforated silhouette, as well as the brand’s bold heritage red—a color synonymous with power and nobility, and one symbolically shared with PSG’s own colors and the French flag—providing an interconnecting tissue between the brand, the club, and their collection. PSG badges made of Jordan’s 3M material flash with the camera’s click; the centered vertical dotting on the kit comes directly from the XIII’s leather pattern; red taping and line work appears on sneakers, the back of the kit, and even inside the lining of the plush and puffy Flight Parka.
Whether on the pitch or the streets of Paris, Jordan’s high-end foray into football is a welcome enterprise and a new level of cool in an ever-expanding world of football and fashion.
