LOSC Lille Get A Fresh Look.
New Balance reveal the new Lille Third Kit for 2020/2021 season.
There’s a freshness about LOSC Lille, lately. Once a peripheral “merger” club on the Franco-Belgian border, now they’re finding a definitive swagger in Ligue 1, and Champions League qualification is starting to become routine.
Next year, that swagger will compliment a brand new look. As part of their “We Are the New Blood” campaign, LOSC and New Balance have released a trio of new kits, most recently a classy all-white third strip representing a hybrid of tradition and modernity.
We spoke to the man responsible for the design, New Balance Apparel Designer Joe Gillibrand, about the reemergence of the team and its home: “It feels as if the city and LOSC are growing in stature at the same exponential rate. Scratch the surface and there’s a world of vibrant, entrepreneurial youth culture driven by passionate local people.”
A closer look at the third kit reveals subtle nods to the club’s customary Tricolour, as well as more à la mode detailing, like a cyan blue and red anaglyph graphic (an early form red-blue 3D effect). The New Balance logo and the LOSC crest have been applied with an anaglyph as well, adding further depth to the design and nodding to the disruptive ambitions of the team. The underside of the club badge reads “Nous Sommes Les Dogues”, forefronting the club mascot—a great dane—and issuing a sort of public rallying cry for the kind of youth and dynamism that are the heartbeat of the city.
In some ways, it seems LOSC Lille has discovered its future in its past. A rebrand in 2018, followed by their 75th anniversary last year saw the beginnings of a steady return to Champions League football after a seven-year absence, rebounding convincingly from relegation peril not long before. “It’s a challenge we relish when designing for LOSC,” says Gillibrand. “There’s a lot of tradition to be respected when designing but that must be intertwined with producing something fresh, exciting, and above all, meaningful.” It’s not always a case of out-with-the-old when issuing in the new. LOSC Lille looks to have manifested a bright future balancing both, and we’re excited to see what’s ahead for this underdog story.
